Even though the spring festival is essentially a religious festival, a great deal of gaiety and merriment pervades the streets of Seville. The bars get filled up, families come out to participate in the celebrations.
Semana Santa means "Holy Week" and it is the Spanish name for Easter. During Semana Santa week processions of brotherhoods of the churches march through the town Seville, Spain - beautifully dressed up floats follow them. The processions typically start in the afternoons and traverse the town. The climax is reached on Good Friday morning when the procession leave the churches at midnight and move through the streets for the better part of the night eventually reaching the cathedral in the wee hours of the morning.
To get a birds eye view of the procession, go to the the Giralda and the Bishop's Palace where stands are erected for the spectators.
