History
Zoological Gardens were established by the Burra Sahibs and Bengal Babus who dreamt of developing Kolkata at par with the European cities during the British rule. Spread across the sprawling 100 acre campus, Zoological Garden is one of the largest and oldest zoos of India where one can spend the whole day in its peaceful natural surroundings and vast range of flora and fauna.
At Zoological Garden one can find the wide species of birds and animals along with the hibernating animals from across the world. White Tigers, elephants, deer’s, Asian lions, giraffes, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, horses and many other animals are found inside the vicinity of the garden. Birdwatchers’ paradise, Zoological Garden is an ideal place to spot some rare and striking species of birds including exotic pheasants, Bhutan peacocks, white stork, macaws, spoonbill, and cockatoo among others at the Zoological gardens.
Zoological Garden is also known as Alipore Garden and has contributed extensively in breeding the extinct Manipur brown antlered deer. It is also one of the first zoos to have produced the cross-breeds namely, Litigons and Tigions. The Zoological Gardens also houses various reptiles and rare species of Cobras and Pythons.

Best time to visit
The best time to visit the place is during winters when birds from across the world come to the zoo for hibernation.

Trivia
Zoological Gardens were first of its kind in entire Asia.The zoo housed the Aldabra Giant Tortoise Adwaita, which was believed to have been over 250 years old when it died.
