History
Rabindra Bharati Museum, the store house of memories of the great Rabindra Nath Tagore was established by Lt. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. Established on the grounds of Jorasanko Thakurbar Bari, the museum is located in Kolkata. It is the ancestral house of the Tagore family and is now an integral part of Rabindra Bharati University.
Well known as ‘kavi guru’, meaning the poet of poets, and the receiver of Nobel Laureate, Rabindra Nath Tagore has always been a source of inspiration for the contemporary poets and writers. Rabindra Bharati Museum contains a number of personal letters, first edition books written by Tagore along with the other books written on him. A number of manuscripts and around 770 journals related to him and the furniture used by the Tagore family are also kept here. It preserves the clippings of Tagore and a number of pictures and paintings of him and the entire family. The gifts received by him on different occasions are also present in the Rabindra Bharati Museum.
The museum also has a section that stores old musical records and discs. It will be really interesting to listen to the original songs in the voices of those fortunate, who learnt the songs directly by Tagore. The Museum also includes possessions and information of the other great personalities of the 19th and 20th Century, who excelled in the field of Literature.
It will be a treat to witness the sound and light show at the museum that depicts the entire story of coming up of the Tagore’s to this house along with portraying their glorious role in the Bengal Renaissance. It highlights the entire life history of Rabindra Nath Tagore, telling about his achievements and major events of his life.
The Museum celebrates the month of Baishakh. Along with the grand celebrations on the birthday of Rabindra Nath Tagore, the Museum also celebrates the birthdays of other renowned poets like Maharshi Devendranath Tagore, Jyotirindranath, Abanindranath and Dinendranath. Rabindra Bharati Museum attracts a number of poets, literature students and artists every year.

Best time to visit
The Museum can be visited at any time of the year. If you are planning to explore the rest of Kolkata then the best time to visit is between October and March when you will conveniently miss the sweaty and humid weather.

The Museum is open from Monday to Friday from 10:00 am till 5:00 pm.
