History
Marble Palace is a splendid nineteenth-century mansion situated in North Kolkata. The place is one of the best-conserved and most graceful houses in Kolkata which were built in the 19th century. Till date the mansion lures people to marvel at its marble walls and floors, from which it gets its current name. Built by Raja Rajendra Mullick in 1835, a wealthy Bengali merchant and a connoisseur, with a zeal for gathering works of art, today Marble Palace houses his posterity.
In the vicinity of the mansion one can find large collections of Western sculpture and Victorian furniture, works of art by European and Indian artists, amongst others. Also, there is the popular Marble Palace Zoo, which is sited next to the palace. Known to be the first zoo opened in India by Raja Rajendra Mullick, the zoo is primarily an aviary, housing species like peacocks, pelicans, hornbills, cranes and storks. The menagerie in the zoo also contains monkeys and numerous species of deer for its visitors.
Though not very exhaustive, the zoo is like a small home to various species of animals and attracts many visitors each year.
