History
Founded with the support of the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1814, the Indian Museum in Kolkata is the earliest and the largest multi-use museum in the entire Asia-Pacific region. It is reckoned, that the history of the starting point and the expansion of the Indian Museum is one of the most extraordinary events towards the growth of heritage and society of the Indian subcontinent. Today, it stands in the building of the Asiatic Society in Kolkata.
With the foundation of Indian Museum in 1814, the Museum movement commenced in India and since then it got a new impetus and an immense thrust. Henceforth, the movement grew admirably and concluded with the prolific establishment of over 400 museums across the nation.
Today the Indian Museum is largely visited to witness the place which laid down the foundation of such a great momentum in the country and gave the nation the thought for celebrating its laurels in various spheres. The place is worth a visit anytime; however, the best time to visit Indian Museum is between October and March.

The visiting hours of the museum are:
10:00 am to 5:00 pm (March – November)
10:00 am to 4:30 pm (December – February)
The museum remains closed on Mondays and gazetted holidays.
