History

Dodabetta Peak, in the hill-station of the picturesque Ooty in Tamil Nadu is the highest point of the Nilgiri Hills, nearly 2623 meters high. The Dodabetta peak is located at a distance of about 10 km from Ooty, on the Ooty-Kotagiri Road in the Nilgiri District.

The Dodabetta Peak offers you the most glorious view of the Nilgiri Range, Chamundi Hills, the town of Ooty, the enchanting view of the valley and the Coimbatore plains. The peak is surrounded by reserve forests making it a spectacular view and the lower slopes of the peak are sprawled and landscaped with a Botanical Garden, spread over 50 acres, making it a stunning sight. The Botanical Garden was made by Marquis of Tweeddale in 1848.

Other sites around the Dodabetta Peak that must be seen are the exotic Rose Garden spread over 10 acres and has over 2000 varieties of roses, St. Stephens Church, children amusement park, Mini Garden and the artificial lake, Ooty Lake.

There is a Telescope House located at the top of the peak, and is managed by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation. This telescope house allows tourists to get a better view of the beautiful surroundings. TTDC also has restaurant located at the peak catering to tourists and visitors. There are activities like trekking also organized at the Dodabetta Peak.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the Dodabetta Peak is from September to May. Monsoons should be avoided as sightseeing is impossible. However you must check the weather report before heading for the peak, and make sure you go on a clear day to see the maximum of the surroundings.

Trivia

The name Dodabetta literally translates to “Big Hill” in the Kannada language. Dodabetta Peak, the highest in the Nilgiri Range is also the highest peak in South India.

The exotic Rose Garden located close to the Dodabetta Peak has over 2000 varieties of roses.

Timing

The Telescope House on Dodabetta Peak is open for tourists from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

The last entry is at 4:00 pm.
