History
Pasteur Institute of Coonoor is one of the leading institutes of India in the production of Anti-rabies Vaccine and DPT group of vaccines for the expanded program of immunization of government of India. The institute was established on 6th April 1907 and started functioning as an autonomous body under the ministry of Health and Family Welfare from 10th February 1977. The institute is named after the great scientist, Louis Pasteur, who with his knowledge of science made a significant breakthrough in the field of science.
Pasteur Institute has been at the forefront for the battle against infectious diseases. Louis Pasteur’s successors have maintained the reputation of the institute through all these years. Since World War II, researchers at Pasteur institute are experimenting and gaining knowledge on molecular biology. Some researchers from the institute have also won Nobel prizes.
Louis Pasteur Museum, located inside the building of Pasteur Institute gives us a glimpse at Louis Pasteur’s life and work. The place also includes the collection of scientific objects illustrating the scientist's work, as well as the Byzantine funeral chapel where Pasteur is buried.
Today, Pasteur Institute is the leading research institute of the world which houses 100 research units and close to 2,700 people, including 500 permanent scientists and another 600 scientists visiting from 70 countries annually. The institute also has a global network of 24 foreign institutes devoted to medical problems in developing countries.
