History
The Koniamman Temple is one of the most famous temples of Coimbatore. The Temple was built around 600 years ago by the leader of a small cult ‘Irulas’. The small village where it was built was named as ‘Covanputhur’ after the leader of this group, ‘Covan’. Later the name Covanputhur changed to what we know today as, Coimbatore.
The story of the construction of the temple is an interesting one! The tribe built a fort to guard Covanputhur from the invasion of the Chola rulers but to guard the fort, a temple was constructed and they named the predominant deity of this temple as Goddess Koniamman. Later the ruler of Mysore dynasty further constructed and consecrated the Goddess Koniamman in the style of "Mahisasura mardhani" that means the slayer of buffalo demon.
A number of festivals are celebrated by the Temple like, the famous Car festival where the holy deity takes a tour of the city in the beautifully decorated car and an annual fourteen days festival is also held here attracting a large number of devotes every year. The ‘Abisheka Thertham’ (enchanted water obtained after bathing the idol) is said to carry many therapeutic values.
This temple a must visit when in Coimbatore!

Best time to visit
One can visit this place throughout the year due to the pleasant weather conditions of Coimbatore, but the best time is from October to March.

The temple authority charges a ticket for almost everything like, coconut ticket Rs1, Ghee lamps Rs2, video Rs150, camera Rs75 and special entrance charges too.
The people here have implicit faith in the healing powers of the deity of this temple.

The timings for visiting the Temple are from 6:00 am to 12:30 pm & 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
