Annamalai University

The Annamalai University is a public residential university located at Annamalai Nagar in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu. It offers courses of higher education the fields of arts, sciences and engineering, besides providing close to 380 courses under its distance education program.

The university owes its existence to the altruism of the late Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar who started the university in 1929, after having begun countless other colleges as well. Spread spaciously over an area close to a thousand acres, the university strives to achieve the aims set by its noble Founder Pro-Chancellor, who was succeeded by his son, Padma Bhushan Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar, as the Pro-Chancellor between the years of 1948 and 1984, who continued with his father’s mission of developing and nurturing the university. The position is currently occupied by Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy, son of Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar.

In the past eighty two years since its inception, the University has gone from strength to strength, creating a niche for itself in the educational landscape, as a quality unitary and residential University, with 49 study Departments, and a faculty of over 3240 teachers. Annamalai Nagar, the town that the university is nestled in, is already a complete University town, lying in the east of Chidambaram, the abode of Lord Nataraja. The university boasts of an impressive list of alumni, among them being Ravi Gomatam, Quantum Physicist, director of Bhaktivedanta Institute and Institute for Semantic Information Sciences and Technology, Berkeley, and Mumbai, popular Tamil actor Vijaya T. Rajendar and renowned Indian physicist Ramanuja Vijayaraghavan. The budding campus, complete with its multiple colleges, lively hostels, and huge playgrounds, provides an ideal atmosphere for its students to pursue academic excellence.
