History
Cited as one of the major attractions in the city of Chennai, Chennai Snake Park is one of the eco-friendly biological parks that boasts of numerous species of rare reptiles and snakes like the deadly king cobras, vipers, pythons, adders, kraits, giant turtles and monitor lizards and attracts thousands of tourists every year.
The Chennai Snake Park is home to more than 30 species of Indian snakes that are bred here, along with species of lizards, crocodiles and turtles. Some of the species of snakes you can find here include King Cobra, Indian Rock Python, Reticulated Python, Adders and Vipers. The park also houses a museum where preserved reptile and amphibian specimens are kept on display.
Founded by one of the well-known wildlife conservationists Romulus Whitaker, the park was established in 1972 with an aim to preserve and protect the endangered reptile species in the sub-continent. Situated in the Guindy area in Adyar – one of the suburbs of Chennai, the Chennai Snake Park is maintained by the Madras Snake Park Trust and also has a well-maintained Children’s Park nearby that has got varied collection of animals and birds.

Best time to visit
The best time to visit the Chennai Snake Park is between the months of November and February when the weather is pleasant enough to step out and explore the numerous species of snakes kept in the park.

Chennai Snake Park also gained the recognition as Medium Zoo from the Central Zoo Authority in the year 1995!

Timing
The park is open to the public from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm from Wednesday to Monday and is closed on Tuesdays.
