Shilpgram

History

Shilpgram at Udaipur also known as The Craft Village or The Artisan's Village, is situated at a distance of 3 kms west from Udaipur near the Havala village. The Rural Arts and Crafts Complex is the Centre of the artisan village and is envisaged as a breathing ethnographic museum to portray the ways of life of the rural and tribal citizens of the Western Zone. Within this compound, huts of the member states are constructed including conventional architectural characteristics of diverse geographical and ethnic communities dwelling within the Western Zone of India.

One of the significant objectives behind creating the Shilpgram is to increase consciousness and information apropos rural life and crafts, purposely, for the younger Therefore, extraordinary importance is laid on workshops for children of arts, crafts, theatre and music

Two museums have also been developed in the Shilpgram where ordinary objects of daily use, that symbolize the aesthetics in country and tribal life are put on exhibit. In addition, a Crafts Bazar called 'haat' was made from where guests could buy traditional crafts from a particular zone. Even craftsmen are invited at regular intervals to show their talent and sell the crafts to the people at the Shilpgram.

Furthermore an open air Amphitheatre with a seating capability of approx 8000 people also makes the place a venue for chief theatre festivals which the Centre organize here. Shilpdarshan is a progressing activity at Shilpgram in which traditional performing artists and craftsmen come and share their local talents with the visitors and create awareness regarding their culture and traditions.

While one would shop and travel around handicrafts, various musicians and dancers entertain the visitors with their respective arts. Shilpgram Crafts Mela is surely a genuine attempt to give gratitude to the local arts of inaccessible villages of Rajasthan.

One’s visit to this fair would absolutely entice one towards the cultural rural arts and crafts dwelling in the remote parts of the nation.

Best time to visit

The Shilpgram Festival is organised every year in the months of November or December, thus one should try visiting during these months.

Shilpgram Mela is famous for its handicrafts and artwork; this fair is an ideal destination to try out the handicrafts in the form of clothes or accessories or interior decoration stuff, etc. Indeed, the hand woven garments and camel leather stuff grab the major notice of visitors in this fair.

Timing

The timings for the popular haat bazaar at Shilpgram are from 12:00 p.m every day; many local and distant traders set their shops of clothes, handicraft, crockery and food products etc at this market at Shilpgram. The evening program starts from 6.00 p.m until 8.30 p.m.
