Monsoon Palace

History

The Monsoon Palace, also known formerly as the Sajjan Garh Palace, is a palatial residence located on a hilltop in the city of Udaipur, Rajasthan. Overlooking Lake Pichola, the Monsoon Palace owes its former name to Maharana Sajjan Singh of the Mewar Dynasty, who was responsible for its construction in the year 1884. Built essentially with the purpose to watch the monsoon clouds, it offers a panoramic view of the city's lakes, palaces and surrounding countryside. Due to this, it is also known as the Monsoon Palace.

The construction of the Monsoon Palace is characterised by the usage of white marble. Its original planner, Maharana Sajjan Singh, originally aspired to build a nine-storey complex, for use as an astronomical centre and to keep track of the movement of the monsoon clouds. The Maharana however, died prematurely at the age of 26, and all plans for the palace were shelved for the time being. The palace was finally completed by his successor king Maharana Fateh Singh.

Sajjangarh Palace stands on marble pillars which have been carved with beautiful motifs of leaves and flowers. The illuminated palace with its domes, fountains and jharokhas exudes a fairy tale like beauty. There is also a unique water harvesting structure to collect rainwater in an underground cistern.

It is believed that Maharana Sajjan Singh built it here to get a view of his ancestral home of Chittaurgarh. The palace is now under the control of the Forest Department of the Government of Rajasthan.
