Maharana Pratap Memorial

History

Located in Udaipur, Maharana Pratap Memorial, also known as Pratap Smarak, is an accomplishment of the efforts of Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar with the aid of a public trust in the year 1651.

A structure built on top of Moti Magri (Pearl Hill), overlooking the Fatah Sagar Lake, Maharana Pratap Memorial comprises of a bronze statue of Rajput Hero Maharana Pratap riding on his loyal and favourite horse "Chetak". It is believed that Chetak was a faithful horse who was extremely devoted towards Maharana Pratap and stood by his master till the end.

Chetak was killed in the battle of Haldighati in 1576 that took place between the Rajputs and Mughals. Consequently, the environs of Maharana Pratap Memorial has the ruins of one of the earliest forts of Udaipur Moti Mahal, which was occupied by Maharana Pratap’s father Maharana Udai Singh where he stayed on his first visit to Udaipur. Tourists who visit pay their tribute to Maharana Pratap and his loyal 'Chetak'. There are statues of Maharana Pratap associates Hakim Khan Sur, Bhamashah, Bhilu Raja, and Jhalaman assembled along with the Smarak (memorial).

The hilltop gives the elaborate and picturesque view of Udaipur city making photography a winning experience. Also, the Japanese Rock Garden and the forts of Udaipur in the vicinity of the hill are worth visiting.

Best time to visit

The most favourable and pleasant time to visit the memorial is during the winters i.e. October to March. The climate of Udaipur is harsh with mercury staying at a maximum of 42.3°C. Month to avoid are March to September.

Trivia

This distinguished statue of Maharana Pratap has been a part of various Bollywood movies. The 900 years of brave and eminent history of Mewar from Bappa Rawal to Maharana Pratap, is narrated through a light and sound show at Maharana Pratap Memorial organised by Maharana Pratap Smarak Samiti.

Timing

The visiting hours for the memorial are 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, daily.
