Lake Palace

History

Lake Palace is one of the beautiful spots in the historic city of Udaipur. Formerly known as Jag Niwas Palace, Lake Palace is now a luxurious hotel located on the natural foundation of 4 acres on the Jag Niwas Island. The hotel at present has 83 room suites with marble walls. Lake Palace was built by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1746. It was initially treated as summer palace for the royal family.

Lake Palace was built facing the east side so that the resident of the palace can enjoy the glorious sunrise. Visitors who visits lake palace enjoys the beautiful lily pond built inside the palace. The walls of the palace are embroidered and designed similar to that of Taj, Agra. The palace has numerous courtyards that are aligned with beautiful columns, terraces, fountains and well-laid gardens. Rooms in the Lake Palace are named as Bada Mahal, Khush Mahal, Ajjan Niwas, Phool Mahal and Dhola Mahal. These rooms are decked with paintings, stainted glass-work, pink and blue lotus leaves, and paintings and carved arches.

It is said that the Lake Palace is inspired from exquisite construction of the Taj Mahal of Agra.
