Bagore Ki Haveli

History

The Bagore ki Haveli, located in Udaipur in the state of Rajasthan, is a place of unrivalled splendour. Situated along the waterfront of Lake Pichola at Gangori Ghat, the haveli was constructed by the Prime Minister of Mewar, Amir Chand Badwa in the eighteenth century.

The haveli is characterised by several beautiful costumes and pieces of modern art, that have been spread across the over hundred rooms for display. This apart the interiors of this beautiful mansion boasts of superb glass and mirror work along with a Mewar painting in the Queen's Chamber. Following the construction of the haveli and the death of its creator, Amarchand, the building was taken over by Royal family of Mewar, and Nath Singh, a relative of the maharani, occupied it.

In the year 1878, the triple-arched gateway was added to the edifice of the haveli and post-independence, the haveli served as a residence for government employees, as the mansion was taken over by the state government of Rajasthan. However, an utter lack of neglect caused the haveli to degenerate greatly, until the year 1986, when its control was transferred to the West Zone Cultural Centre.

Originally planned as a museum to represent the culture of the states of the west zone, the idea was later dropped due to the distinct architecture of the haveli itself, and it was converted into a museum that showcased the culture of Mewar. To accomplish this, several experts of the Royal family were called in, and local materials were used to repair and replace damaged doors and windows.
