Palace On Wheels

The Palace on Wheels in Jaipur is a luxury tourist train that was started by the Indian Railway with the purpose of promoting tourism in the state of Rajasthan. Voted the 4th luxurious train in the world in 2010, the train was renovated and launched again in the year 2009.

The idea behind the train originated from the regal backdrop of the coaches, initially designed as personal coaches of the princely states of Rajputana, Gujarat, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India.

The interiors of the luxurious train were done by Delhi-based interior designer Monica Khanna. The train has a total of 14 coaches, the names of each coming from the former Rajput states, with special focus on the aesthetics of royal heritage of places such as Alwar, Bharatpur, Jaisalmer, Jaipur, Jhalawar, Jodhpur, Kishangarh, Kota, Sirohi, Udaipur. There are four coaches in each cabin, and two restaurants the Maharaja and The Maharani, both done in a Rajasthani ambiance. The journey begins from New Delhi, and over eight days takes the tourist across Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Sawai Madhopur, Chittaurgarh, Udaipur, Bharatpur, and Agra. Originally, the tickets for the Palace on Wheels were sold only to the foreign nationals, before being opened up to Indians. The tariffs though, are still in US Dollars.
