Nahargarh Fort

History

Situated on the Aravali foothills the Nahargarh Fort is located in Jaipur. The fort, together with Amber Fort and Jaigarh Fort, was once part of a defence line that protected the city of Jaipur. Originally called Sudarshangarh, it eventually came to be known as Nahargarh, which when translated means, the 'abode of tigers'.

A local belief is that the word Nahar stands for Nahar Singh Bhomia, his spirit still believed to be residing here, and having originally stopped the construction of the fort. His spirit was calmed eventually by constructing a temple dedicated to him within the fort premises, and the fort was named after him.

The fort was constructed in the year 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur. It first served as a retreat for the king, following which its walls were extended to the neighbouring hills. Although never attacked through its history, it witnesses events such as the signing of treaties with the Maratha forces. During the 1857 Mutiny, the fort served as a hideout for the Europeans staying in the region.

Don’t forget to visit the Madhavendra Bhawan that was constructed by Sawai Madho Singh as a summer retreat for the royal family. A luxury in itself, the bhawan has suites dedicated to each of the nine queens of Jaipur, as well as a separate suite for the king.

Till the year 1944, the state government of Jaipur State used the fort for solar time reading from the Jantar Mantar Observatory. A shot fired from the fort of Nahargarh served the purpose of a time signal.
