History of Simlipal

The Simlipal National Park is situated in the Mayurbhanj district of Orissa. The history of Simlipal City dates back to the time when this place was used as a hunting area for the royal families of the state. Later, in 1956, this park was designated as a tiger reserve.

In 1979, Government of Orissa declared Simlipal as a national park. The park has a wildlife sanctuary and a tiger reserve. There is remarkable variation of topography, to support varieties of fauna. In 1994, Simlipal was declared as a biosphere reserve by the Government of India and in May 2009, the UNESCO added Simlipal National Park to its list of Biosphere Reserves.

Interestingly, although it has got the status of a Biosphere Reserve, there are around 10,000 people living in 61 villages in the forest.
