History

Mizoram State Museum in Aizawl is one of the most sought after tourist destinations in the city as it showcases the state’s glories and accolades from the past. Situated in the centre of the main town, near the Chief Minister’s residence, the museum possesses exciting exhibits relating to the Mizo culture. The place is filled with a plethora of artefacts, and contains many items that echo the cultural heritage of the state.

Mizoram State Museum was basically established in the year 1977 to give the state an ethnological museum. Today, it stores more than 2500 items, each of which is a proof of the affluent past and ethnic background of Mizoram. Indeed one would find an entire gallery especially devoted to the tribes of Mizoram providing an insight into their lives, their origin, their legacies, their beliefs, their populace, and lot more.

Mainly, the museum houses objects like photographs, archaeological objects, musical instruments, and natural history samples, which take the tourists on an adventurous trip of knowing Mizoram from the very beginning.

Visiting the Mizoram State Museum would be ideal between October and March period.

The most admired among all the exhibits at the museum is the artefact portraying the textiles of the tribes of Mizoram.

The museum is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (Monday to Friday), and 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturdays.
