History of Lonavala

The history of Lonavala City dates back to the time of Yadavas. In the ancient times, Lonavala was under the rule of Yadava dynasty. Later on, Mughals took over and ruled over the city. After the Mughals, the Marathas and Peshwas came into power and ruled the city.

In 1818, the British started ruling and then after independence, Lonavala became one of the prime hill stations in Maharashtra.

The city was under the rule of many kings and this is evident from the ancient monuments and forts. Archaeologists find this place worth exploring. The forts, caves and lakes are some of the historical sites worth visiting. Bhaja caves and Karla caves are believed to have been created way back in the 2nd century B.C.
