History of Indore

The history of Indore is can not be separated from the history of the Holkar state as the city was planned and built by Rani Ahilya Bai – the Holkar queen. Ahilya Bai was one of the most important Maratha personalities whose cherished dream was to make Indore a prosperous city and although the queen loved the city very much and wanted it to be the state capital it was only after her death that the state capital was shifted from Maheshwar to Indore in 1811 AD and today it is known as the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh.
