Indore is on the Ratlam division of the western railway and is connected to the major cities in India. Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Vadodra are some of the major cities connected to Indore through railways.

The station is divided into two sections metre and broad gauge; Khandwa and Ratlam are the two major junctions on the metre gauge.
