| | Things to do in Periyar |
|
Periyar has a host of thing to do. The wildlife enthusiast can go on a safari and sight the hordes of wild elephants and nilgai – and if lucky, maybe even a tiger. Take jungle safari by elephant or jeep or even better still, a boat that will take you around the surrounding lake from where you can glimpse wildlife in their natural habitat.
The naturalist will delight in the number of butterflies species in the park and the can head on to the spice gardens in the vicinity to buy the fresh aromatic cardamoms and other spices to take back home.

Sightseeing is confined within the park. You may not get to see the Bengal Tiger here considering there are less than 40 of them that inhabit an area of 777 sq km, but there is plenty of other game like Nilgiri Langur, Nilgiri Tahr, bison, deer, antelope and about 700 elephants to make the trip worthwhile.

There are limited places for shopping in Periyar, however, the town’s spice market is well-known in Kerala.

There are a host of activities to do in Periyar. Most of the activities are nature and wildlife centric, making it an enjoyable experience.

The cardamom stretch makes for a remarkable drive in the neighbourhood where spice markets flourish amidst plantations that groom the views.

There are numerous options for eating out in Periyar. The restaurants here serve a wide variety of local dishes that are both exotic and spicy at the same time.

Some of the important festivals in Periyar that are celebrated by the tribal people of Periyar include Mahashivratri, Easter, Malayalam New Year and Onam along with Christmas.
