Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary

History

Located at a distance of 66 km from Kannur and 122 km from Kozhikode is the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a must visit tourist attraction if you are on a trip towards the Northern Kerala. Established in 1984, the sanctuary falls in Aralam, Kelakam and Kottiyoor villages and is situated in the Northwest slopes of Western Ghats adjacent to the forests of Coorg district in Karnataka. This vast and beautiful sanctuary covers a gigantic area of 55 square km.

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary has a tropical and semi evergreen forest that houses teak as well as eucalyptus plantations within the forest area. A major wildlife of Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary includes Elephant, Bison, Sambar, Deer, Boar, Sloth Bear, Leopard, Jungle Cat and different types of squirrels. The forest also has a rich avifauna and reptiles.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is from October to June, though it can be visited throughout the year.

The sanctuary is covered with forests with about 490 hectares of eucalyptus and teak farms.

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
