History
Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, more commonly known as the Mysore Zoo, is one of the oldest zoos in India. It was established by the royals in 1892 and covers 245 acres. The zoo is home to a wide range of species with maximum number of elephants as compared to any other zoo.
Mysore Zoo has been a residence of 34 elephants which were later transferred to other zoos. Apart from giraffes, zebras, lions, tigers, white rhinoceros and baboons, there are 5 green anacondas which have been contributed by Colombo Zoo.
Even though the zoo was established in 1892, it was opened to public in 1902. Now Mysore Zoo consists of an artificial lake and a bandstand. In 1948, it was gifted to the Mysore State Government’s Department of Parks and Gardens. After the Mysore State Government got the park, they first expanded it by 50 acres and later with 150 acres. After getting hold of the Karanji reservoir, the department of Parks and Gardens (Mysore), created a sanctuary for birds in the form of an artificial island. Finally this zoo was handed over to the Zoo Authority of Karnataka.
