Mysore Railway Museum

History

One of the earliest railway museums in the country, the Railway Museum in Mysore was established in 1979 by Indian Railways, after the National Railway Museum in Delhi. It was one of a kind open-air exhibit of locomotives in India.

The Maharaja of Mysore has contributed to the museum with his royal carriages which decks the treasure of the Railway Museum by giving a glimpse of the way the royalty used to travel.

The main highlight of this museum is Sri Ranga Pavilion, which are the two royal coaches that belonged to the Maharaja of Mysore. This pavilion incorporates in its structure wonderfully engraved wooden pillars, doors and banisters from the old Srirangapatna Railway Station.

A conspicuous feature of the museum is the Chamundi Gallery that highlights a distinguishing and attractive compilation of photographs and paintings portraying the development of the railways.

Majority of the displays in the museum were once housed in the Mysore Palace. Indeed, the first steam engine is exhibited and conserved here well.

The museum even has a cordless mini-train that takes one on a journey around the grounds of the museum. This toy train is the main attraction for kids.
