History
Considered as one of the major attractions of Mysore the majestic Chamundi Hills are an abode of all powerful Goddess Chamundi or Chamundeshwari and rises up to the height of 3,489 feet. The picturesque Chamundi Hills are renowned for a Dravidian style Chamundi Temple and an imposing 16 ft tall monolith statue of Nandi Bull – the mount of Lord Shiva.
According to Hindu mythology, Chamundi Hills were domain of the demon Mahisasur – the buffalo demon. A boon was granted to Mahisasur that no man can destroy him. People in order to save themselves from the demon prayed to Goddess Shakti who took the avatar Chamundeshwari and killed Mahisasur and saved them. The hilltop is where the shrine of the Goddess is located. The temple of Mahabaleshwar, which is the oldest temple of Karnataka is also located on the Chamundi Hills. The hill was renamed from Mahabaleshwar to Chamundi Betta during the 17th century.
One can enjoy the panoramic view of Mysore city atop these picturesque hills either during the day or in the night when the entire city is lit up creating an illusion of millions of stars twinkling below. There are also many trekking paths along the hills, where tourist can enjoy the beauty of nature as well as have fun with friends and family.
