Bijapur Travel Guide

Bijapur is a heritage destination known for its medieval monuments, which are a unique form of Islamic architecture. It consists of three distinct portions: the citadel, the fort and the remains of the city.

The heritage city of Bijapur lies in the Deccan Plateau and is originally known as the Queen of Deccan. Bijapur represents a desolate landscape of red, rocky hills, long stretches of treeless fields and gigantic rocks speckled in groups over the rolling plains. Bijapur is steeped in history and is strewn with mosques, sepulchers, palaces, forts, watchtowers, striking gateways, stylish minarets; and mile of ruins.

The Gol Gumbaz here has an amazing whispering gallery that distinctly echoes the faintest whisper 11 times! Did you know the Malik-e-Maidan in Bijapur was once almost sold for a meagre sum of INR 150 to the British by a Magistrate but was cancelled by the Satara commissioner.

It is believed that to avoid going deaf, the gunner lighting the cannon (largest weapon ever built in medieval times) at the Malik-e-Maidan had to submerge his head in water before firing.
