History
Venkatappa Art Gallery & Government Museum is a part of the Karnataka Government Museum and is a must visit for true art lovers. Built in 1865, it houses a varied collection of sculptures, paintings, coins and artifacts. Some of these works of art even date back to the Indus Valley civilization.
The museum is a two storied building with a proud display of about 600 paintings. The ground floor has the art section dedicated to the renowned artist K Venkatappa. His paintings effortlessly capture the scenic beauty of hill stations like Ooty and Coorg to name a few.
The second floor has some of the most beautiful works by artists like M F Hussain, Vasudev, Hanumaiah, Hariram, Rekha Rao, Yusuf Arakkal and N S. Bendre. Also showcased here are the works by K K Hebbar entitled as Vayu, Jala, Prithvi, Sea Shore, In Space, Nagamandala, Agni, Last Glimpse and Death.
The museum also has a huge collection of terracotta from West Bengal and Mathura.The art works on display here are some of the most exclusive piece of work and not to be missed!

The Museum is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and is closed on Wednesdays.
