Ulsoor Lake

History

Ulsoor Lake is a manmade lake which lies on the northeast side of Bangalore city and is in close proximity to the M.G. Road in Bangalore. The lake was constructed way back in the second century by Kempe Gowda II and is spread over an area of over 300 acres. Ulsoor Lake was earlier known as Alasur or Halsur Lake and is a popular tourist destination in Bangalore.

Besides the beautiful surroundings the lake also holds a position of a religious place because of a story attached to it. It is believed that the area around Ulsoor Lake was once surrounded by thick forest. Kempe Gowda while hunting fell asleep the same tree under which Mandava Rishi is believed to have worshipped God Somesvara. He dreamt of God Somesvara, who led him to a hidden treasure nearby using which Kempe Gowda built the famous Somesvara pagoda. Visitors also visit the place to take a look at the many islands that lie within the lake. Another major attraction of the lake is boating, that makes it a popular picnic spot. One can hire rides with stopovers at some of the islands where one can be amongst the nature cut off from the rest of the world.

There is also the Kensington Park, a small garden located towards the north-eastern side of the lake, and a temple dedicated to Subbaraya in the lake area. Ulsoor Lake also has a gymkhana and offers the facilities of a swimming pool and also serves as the venue for the Ganesha Festival celebrated in August/September.
