History
The Sayaji Baug, situated in the city of Vadodra is also known as the Garden of Sayaji. It was built in 1879 by Sayajirao on the banks of river Vishvamitri. The Baug is known for its splendid gardens that are adorned with beautiful pavilions and fountains and serves as a retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city life.
The major attraction of the garden is the floral clock, situated at the centre of the garden and was the first of its kind in Gujarat. The clock consists of an hour, minute and seconds hand that move on the 20 feet diameter dial,its machinery is fixed under the lawn and is surrounded by greenery and flowers on all sides, giving it a natural look.
Besides being home to beautiful pavilions and fountains, the garden also houses the Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery. The museum was built in 1894 to resemble the Victoria & Albert Museum of London and contains a collection of art, sculpture, ethnography & ethnology. It is home to several pieces of art, not only by Indian artists but by some well known British artists too such as J.M.W. Turner and John Constable. The Baug also contains the Sardar Patel Planetarium that organizes regular shows regarding the universe. The garden is also a hot spot for little kids who flock to the garden to enjoy a ride on the Toy Train which runs on a small track width 10 inches and covers a distance of 3.5 km giving the entire view of the garden to the children.
The garden also has on its premises The Sayaji Baug Zoo which was opened as part of the original park in 1879. The zoo has 167 different species of animals numbering a total of 1103 animals. An aquarium was added to the zoo in 1962 that contains 45 species of fish.

Best time to visit
The summers last from March to June with maximum temperatures going up to 37 degrees C. The winters are pleasant with temperatures dropping to 15 degrees .The best time to visit Vadodra is during the winter months of October to March when the climates is extremely suitable.

Trivia
Sayaji Baug is the largest garden in Western India covering an area of over 113 acres and contains more than 98 species of trees.

Timing
The garden is open all days except Thursdays, throughout the year from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The planetarium starts its shows from 5:00 pm and offers a view of the universe in Hindi, English and Gujarati.
