History
Maharaja Sayajirao University of Vadodara is renowned not only for its educational excellence but also for its architectural splendour. The university, which is renowned for its Fine Arts course, was initially established in 1881 as Baroda College, and its present status after independence.
The main building of the erstwhile Baroda College now houses the faculty of Arts, has been designed in Indo-Saracenic architecture style by Robert Fellowes Chisholm in (1840-1915). The Indo-Saracenic architecture is essentially a fusion of Indian and Byzantine arches and domes in brick and polychrome stones. The main dome of the convocation hall was modelled after the great dome of the Gol Gumbad of Bijapur.
Some of the prominent features of Indo-Saracenic architecture that are visible in Maharaja Sayajirao University are onion or bulbous domes, overhanging eaves, pointed arches, cusped arches and scalloped arches, vaulted roofs, domed kiosks, various miniature domes and domed chhatris along with beautifully landscaped gardens that just adds beauty to the majestic look of this university.
Indo-Saracenic architectural style blends the traditional Indian architectural elements like scalloped arches and onion domes, with conventional British architecture and create building that are an architectural delight.
It is believed that Pratap Singh Gaekwad of Baroda (1908–1968), who was the last Maharaja of the erstwhile Baroda State, founded the university in 1949 on the wishes of his grandfather, Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III (1863–1939), and settled the "Sir Sayajirao Diamond Jubilee and Memorial Trust" which exists to date and caters to the education and other needs of the people of the former Baroda State.
