History

Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum is one of the major attractions of Gujarat and just the right place for people with an interest in art. Situated at the magnificent Lakshmi Vilas Palace in the city of Vadodara, Fateh Singh Museum exhibits an incredible royal collection of 19th and 20th centuries including paintings by European and Indian painters, among other displays. The museum houses personal mementos and other artistic assortments that exclusively belonged to the Royal family of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III.

The Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum has been raised at the base of the imposing Lakshmi Vilas Palace. The exquisite patterns and opulent designs on this magnanimous structure reflect a slight resemblance to the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. There is a fine collection of works in marble and bronze from Europe, Japan and China.

The collection in the museum essentially comprises of European paintings of eminent artists like Raphael, Titian and Murillo in addition to modern Western and Indian miniature paintings. The museum also displays an interesting collection of modern and contemporary Indian art. The most prominent paintings include the masterpieces by renowned Indian painter, Raja Ravi Varma who exclusively painted life-like portraits depicting the Royal family of Gaekwad. Some of his paintings also portrayed scenes from Hindu mythology. Along with Chinese and Japanese artwork, the museum also has a rich collection of Indian and Greco-Roman artefacts.

Best time to visit

Ideally, the best time to visit Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum and Vadodara is during the winter months from October to February, as the weather is cool and pleasant, unlike the scorching summer heat.

The section of the palace, now turned into Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum was originally meant to be for educational purpose for the Maharaja's children.

Timing

To visit the Fateh Singh Museum, prior permission and advance booking is mandatory, as it is not open for general public.

The opening hours for the museum are between 10:30 am – 5:30 pm. The museum remains closed on Mondays.
