Rani Ki Vav

Citied as a spectacular piece of architecture, Rani Ki Vav or the Queen’s Step Well, reflects the superb sculpting skills of the artisans of the Solanki era. The step well, which was constructed by Queen Udayamati (AD 1022-63) in the loving memory of her husband King Bhimdev I of Solanki dynasty, is one of the finest step wells in India and a popular legacies of Patan.

The step wells of Gujarat were not just meant to collect water or for the village people to socialise with each other, but they also held a great spiritual significance. Initially constructed in simple designs, the architecture of these step wells grew more complex and carvings more intricate. And Rani Ki Vav is an example of one such step well, which not only boasts of outstanding architecture but intricately carved side walls, pillars, beams and series of steps, which have been built in the Khajuraho style.

The carvings with the central of Dasavataras or ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, including Buddha reflect the splendid architectural skills of the artisans of the Solanki dynasty and leave the visitors in awe. The avatars of Vishnu are accompanied by sadhus, Brahmins and asparas or celestial dancers. However not to be missed is the carved image of Sheshashayi-Vishnu – the reclining image of Lord Vishnu on the thousand hooded Sheshnaga.
