Dwarka Travel Guide

Located on the west coast of Gujarat, in the municipality of Jamnagar district, Dwarka is known as Lord Krishna’s adobe. Dwarka, the holy land surrounded with the legends of Lord Krishna, is a significant pilgrimage site for the Hindus.

This legendary town is well-visited by religious travellers world-wide for its famous Jagatmandir temple that houses the Dwarkadhish (Lord Krishna) and dates back to 2500 years. Nageshvara Jyotirlinga, known as one of the 12 holy shrines of Shiva, is also located near Dwarka. This holy town possesses many temples sprinkled all over and is bliss for religious traveller. So travel to Dwarka if you are looking for some religious bliss.

Dwarka derives its name from Sanskrit as ‘Dwar’ means a door and ‘ka’ means Lord Brahma, the whole name Dwarka literally means a gateway to Brahma or Moksha. It is also known as Dwarkamati and Dwarkavati, Kushsthali and Mokshapuri.

It is believed that due to the damage by sea, Dwarka has submerged 6 times and the modern day Dwarka is the seventh such town to be rebuilt in the area.

Did you know according to Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna had 16108 wives and each one of them had their own palace in Dwarka?

According to a legend, sage Durwasa due to some reasons cursed Rukmini that she would be separated from her husband Lord Krishna, as a result of which the temple of Rukmini is also located outside the town, while that of Krishna inside.
