History
Bharatiya Sanskriti Darshan Museum, also known as the Folk Museum, is located in the city of Bhuj in Gujarat. The museum is a prominent Kutchi cultural centre, one of the few of its kind in the state.
Bharatiya Sanskriti Darshan Museum was established by Ramsinhji K Rathod, a scholar of the folk art of Kutch. It was created as a tribute to the Kutchi villagers who go through life without being acknowledged for their art forms. The museum has been designed in the form of a hut with a huge stone door adorned with beautiful rock carvings welcoming the visitors. Bharatiya Sanskriti Darshan Museum houses a marvellous range of Kutchi folk art and crafts with more focus on the ones belonging to the countryside regions of Kutch district. The central area of the museum has exhibits of rural architecture among beautiful paintings and quality textile arts laced with archaeological specimens such as handis (water jugs made of mud) and wooden and terracotta horses.
The museum has been divided into five major sections. The Ethnological section contains the Sahitya Chitra which houses some rare works of literature. Other sections contain interesting artefacts found all over the Kutch region such as leather embroidery, wood work, wood carvings, terracotta, wall paintings, bead work, stone carvings, musical instruments, knives and swords and silver work. One of the huts of the Bharatiya Sanskriti Darshan Museum holds the intricately designed 'Kothala' (the treasury) which in ancient times were used to store and safe keep ornaments, money, and other valuables of the royalty.
