History

Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is a natural reserve located about 65 kms away from Ahmedabad. The sanctuary mainly comprises of the Nal Sarovar Lake and is visited by over 200 types of birds from various regions like Siberia, Central Asia and Europe. The sanctuary offers boat rides to visitors to help get a closer view of these birds. These migratory birds land at the Nal Sarovar Lake from distant places in order to escape the extreme winter season.

The birds migrate to the Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary during the month of October every year and stay here till April. One can enjoy watching various species of both resident and migratory birds including rosy pelicans, geese, cranes, wading birds, swallows, fishing eagles, osprey, harriers, flamingos, spoonbill and cranes amongst others. The landscape of the lake is splendid and the sight of colourful birds on it makes a delightful setting for any birdwatcher.

The Nal region lies between Gujarat and Saurashtra. It is believed that this low lying region once served as a sea link between Rann and Gulf of Khambat, the remains of which can be seen in the Nal Sarovar.

Apart from being visited by the flock of birds, the place is also known for its wildlife, which includes wild ass and blackbuck amongst others. The disparate plant species found here are known for their medicinal and commercial value. A number of species of fish are also present in the lake. The lake has 360 islets that can be seen clearly when the level of water is low.

Other than boating and bird watching you can enjoy other activities like angling and horse riding on the lake side. The place attracts a number of ornithologists and nature lovers. Binoculars can be carried by the tourists and they can also take video cameras along with them to capture the resplendent nature. If you want to rest in the lap of nature and experience the feeling of being spellbound by its beauty, then Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is a must visit for you.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is anytime between the months of November to February. The best time to view the lake and birds is just before sunrise and sunset.

Migratory birds come in all the way from Siberia. It is a treat to watch them as they are a colourful bunch!

Timing

There are no particular timings for the sanctuary. One can visit the place at anytime of the day.
