Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum

History

Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum, a museum of art & archaeology, is the result of a small initiative undertaken in 1956 by two pioneers - a revered Jain saint Agamprabhakar Muni Shri Punyavijayji Maharaj, and a philanthropic industrialist Shri Kasturbhai Lalbhai. However, as the collection grew in size and number, the need of constructing a museum was felt. It was then that the project was handed over to the internationally acclaimed architect Shri Balkrishnabhai Doshi, and the museum was set open for public display in 1984.

Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum houses a library which has 45,000 printed books and 75,000 manuscripts and there are galleries inside the museum named after some of the renowned art collectors. The ‘P.T. Munshaw Gallery’ showcases a rare collection of coins like one the finest punch-marked coins ‘bentbar’. These coins were posthumously gifted by Smt. Nandiniben Munshaw. ‘Shri Arvindbhai Collection’ includes historic statues of the Chola and Tibetian dynasty. ‘Madhuri D. Desai Gallery’ holds in its collection the largest head of Buddha in stucco from Gandhara, the earliest cult image of Lord Rama (early 6th century) Gupta period from Devagadh to name a few. The ‘Muni Punyavijayaji Gallery’ includes the choicest compilation of paintings which are a perfect blend of Gujarati Jain style.

The museum not only showcases some of the finest works in history but also puts in efforts towards their proper conservation. The L.D. Museum Conservation Laboratory is where cleansing and preservation works are carried out.
