Basilica Of Bom Jesus


Basilica of Bom Jesus is a World Heritage Site which was built in 1605 and is located in old Goa, is one of the oldest churches in Goa and it is considered as an important milestone in the history of Christianity.

The church is 400 years old and a pilgrimage site as Christians come here to pay reverence to the mummified remains of St. Francis Xavier . The remains of the saint are kept in a silver casket in a marble tomb. The saint died in China and was buried there and after 2 years his body was brought back to Goa according to his wish. It was then discovered that the body of the saint was still intact. The body was shifted to Basilica of Bom Jesus in the year 1662 after it was canonized. It is believed that the saint has miraculous powers of healing and his sacred body was as fresh as the day it was buried.

The remains of the saint still attract a large number of devotees Christian and non-Christian from all over the world. There is a public viewing session held in the church every ten years where people from the globe to view the vestiges of the saint. It was last held in the year 2004 and the next is scheduled for 2014.

It is one of the richest churches and the interiors and the exteriors of the church are adorned with architectural and decorative details. The floor of the church is made of pure white marble, decorated with semi-precious stones. The altar of the church is adorned elaborately and covered with gold. The church's interior is strikingly charming yet simple and is built in the Mosaic-Corinthian style. The church is considered as one of the best example of Baroque architecture in India. Lavish use of ornaments with plaster or stucco and marble finishing provides a fine touch to the setting of the church.
