History
Situated on the grounds of Teen Murti House in New Delhi, Nehru Planetarium is the extension of Nehru’s dream to educate the country in terms of science and technology. It was inaugurated by Smt. Indira Gandhi in 1984. The planetarium is air conditioned with a dome shaped sky screen. It broadcasts a number of live and taped public shows on our cosmic heritage, solar system, Halley’s Comet, transit of sun, earth, venus, coral rekindling venus and the voyages of discovery- which include the usage of telescopes from beginning till today. It also displays the Carl Zeiss Space flight placed on a hydraulic lift long with showcasing the rocket which took Rakesh Sharma to space.
A number of workshops on telescope making, astrophotography, and many other fields are being held regularly throughout the year with the aim of diffusing knowledge, highlighting the dream of Nehru. Different activities and programs are also arranged for school students at special timings with the discussions and question answer rounds. The capacity of Nehru Planetarium is 270 visitors at a time. The use of cameras and mobile phones is strictly prohibited in the theatre.
Teen Murti House, the residence of Jawaharlal Nehru is revamped into a museum that comprises library, a number of photographs of Nehru and the gifts received by him narrating his life history and the times of independence. The exquisite museum succeeds in portraying the life of Nehru and has a flame burning day and night in the honour of Nehru Ji called Jawahar Jyoti. The Planetarium is a wing of this museum and is an epitome of knowledge related to space and astronomy. Visited by approximately 200,000 people per year, Nehru Planetarium is a must visit when in Delhi.

Nehru Planetarium can be visited on all days excluding Monday.

Trivia
The number of workshops conducted here has always been interesting for students. A visit to the Planetarium in the months of February and August can grab you the opportunity of participating in Astronomy and Arts quiz.

Timing
The timings for special school shows in Nehru Planetarium are from 9:30 am till 10:30 am. The timings for English shows are 11:30 am and 3:00 pm and that for Hindi shows are 1:30 pm till 4:00 pm. One is requested to be present in the Planetarium 30 minutes before the show timings.
