History
India Gate of Delhi is a majestic arch, 42 meters high, located at Rajpath, New Delhi. The structure was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, who designed New Delhi city. The construction of India Gate was completed in 1931. The entire monument is extremely beautiful and the arch stands on a low base of red Bharatpur stone which rises in stages to a huge molding.
India Gate was constructed as a memorial in honour of 90,000 Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War I. India Gate is also referred to as the ‘All India War Memorial’ for the same reason. Beneath the arch, burns the eternal flame or ‘Amar Jawan Jyoti’ since 1971 that remind the sacrifice of these brave soldiers.
India Gate at present serves as an entertainment spot for the people of Delhi. The place is crowded by the local people of Delhi on summer evenings and winter months. The whole day can be spent relaxing, watching monkey performances, riding a camel, boat rides and picnicking with family. You can taste the typical Indian fast foods, 'fruit chaat', 'bhelpuri', 'chana jor garam', 'dal ka pakodas', aerated drinks from the arcade of vendors stationed there.
