Tribal Cultural Museum

History

The Tribal Cultural Museum is located in Silvassa which is a part of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The museum displays the artefacts and the art and craft work of the tribes located in the area.

The population in Silvassa predominantly comprises of tribals. The Tribal Cultural Museum was built as a tribute to these tribal people to safeguard and display their heritages and art forms by bringing them to light by displaying them in a museum. The museum is a place of collection of the arts crafts and tradition of all the tribes residing in the Union Territory. The entry of the museum is made of handmade torans or garlands and the museum contains various rooms that are shaped as huts on the outside.

The Tribal Cultural Museum displays a good set of masks used in tribal dances, the tribal music equipment musical equipment, fishing implements and life-size sculptures. The museum also showcases puppets, dolls depicting the tribal way of life and tribal knick-knacks. There are also clay models in the museum that also attract visitors to the place. The walls of the museum are heavily decorated with bows, daggers, spears, etc used by the tribes. Apart from ancient artifacts, the tribal’s way of life is displayed through life size models, wedding dresses and photographs of eventful ceremonies.

Other places worth visiting in the area are Roman Catholic Church, Madhuban Dam- a dam with boating facility, built across the River Daman Ganga, the Dadra Park- a scenic beauty with lush green trees and boating facility and Dudhani- a vast lake with a water sports complex.

Best time to visit

The best time to the visit the area is from the month of October to March, when the weather is favourable.

The summers last from March to May are warm whereas winters last from November to February and are generally cool thus being the ideal time to visit the place.

Trivia

Silvassa was declared a tax free zone by the Government of India in order to encourage the setting up of industries and for faster growth of the city.

Timing

The museum can be visited from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on all days except on Fridays and National holidays.
