History
One of the renowned sites of Chandigarh, Sukhna Lake is a manmade lake located at the base of Shivalik Hills of the majestic Himalayas. Cited as one of the desired picnic spots among the locals, Sukhna Lake is a rain-fed lake, which was created in 1958 by creating a dam on the seasonal stream Sukhna Choe flowing down from the Shivalik Hills.
Considered as one of the greatest gifts from Le Corbusier, who in order to preserve the tranquillity of the lake and the surrounding area insisted that there should be no motor boating on the lake and there should be no vehicular traffic on top of the dam.
Sukhna Lake, which offers leisure activities like boating, yachting, sailing, kayaking and water skiing, is quite popular for its serene environs that beckon both the locals and tourists alike to come and spend time in the peaceful surroundings.
People throng this beautiful lake in the morning to enjoy the cool gentle breeze and to get awed by the splendour of nature. A leisurely walk along the lake is quite a relaxing experience as is the chirping of birds that flock this lake.
