History
Rishi Valley School is a boarding school set up at a distance of 25kms from the beautiful hill station of Horsley Hills in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. It is a three hour drive from Bangalore. It was founded by philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti in the year 1926. The school was set up with the purpose of putting the very exceptional vision of education of J. Krishnamurti into practice. He said, “A school is a place where one learns about the totality, the wholeness of life. Academic excellence is absolutely necessary, but a school includes much more than that. It is a place where both the teacher and the student explore, not only the outer world, the world of knowledge, but also their own thinking, their own behavior.”
Rishi Valley School comprises of 360 students with a group of 60 very highly qualified faculty members. The students are chosen from all over the country on the basis of talent, academic performance and the family background. The facilities provided by the school are simple and well maintained.
The 350 acres area for the school was chosen by Jiddu Krishnamurti, for its peace and tranquility that surrounds the school with its rain-fed streams, scattered villages and granite hills. The drought prone area used to be scant in vegetation but years of reforestation and water conservation has now surrounded the once barren hills around the school with young trees. Conservation and enhancement of the environment is one of the important values of the students. In July 1991, Rishi Valley was declared a Bird Sanctuary and is now listed with the International Council for Bird Preservation. Rishi Valley was declared a ‘Special Development Zone’ in 2008 by the Andhra Pradesh government.
Rishi Valley School with its view on education emphasises on shaping up students not only in academic field but on the over-all development of the students with a focus on co-curricular activities and sports. It is one of the best boarding schools of India.
