Neckar Valley

Not many people outside of Germany know of the Neckar Valley, located at a close distance of 10 km from Heidelberg. It is perhaps one of the best kept secrets in Germany and in Europe. Neckar Valley is one of the most beautiful valleys in Germany along with the Rhine and the Danube. There is no more tranquil and scenic part of Germany than the Neckar Valley. The name Neckar was derived from Nicarus and Neccarus from Celtic Nikros, meaning wild water or wild fellow.

River cruises are popular on the Neckar River, and touch some of the most scenic countryside in Germany - a region of wooded hills and medieval castles. Visitors can venture from a few hours cruise, from Heidelberg to Hirschhorn for example, to a few weeks long. Castles, in fact, are among the top-grosser when it comes to tourist attractions in the Neckar Valley. Other than that, the view of the land and the villages from the river is simply magnificent!

If cruising on the river does not appeal to you, you could opt for walking or biking along its shores. As people have been using the valley for moving around, the trails are very well marked and easy to follow. Dilsberg, known for its wild and romantic fortress, is on the other side of the Neckar.

Best time to visit

The main tourist season runs from May to late October, when the weather is at its best. Winters get to be really cold.

Discover the many medieval towns and villages and magnificent castles along the Neckar Valley. They are a wonderful respite from the hustle and bustle of Heidelberg.
