German Wine Route

History

Located in Rhineland-Palatinate in southwest Germany, the German Wine Route is one of the oldest and the most scenic routes of Germany’s wine – themed routes. The 50 miles long wine route was established in 1935 and passes through romantic wine villages such as Freinsheim, St. Martin, Annweiler, Rhodt and Neustadt. The picturesque wine route starts in the town of Bockenheim in the southwest of Germany, but for many visitors, if truth be told, it does not matter whether Schweigen-Rechtenbach in the south is the start or the finish of the route. They enjoy the route so much that they usually take a u-turn back up to Bockenheim to do the tour again.

The landscape in the Palantine highlands and the southwest Palatinate is hilly, planted with vines while the area along the French border is dense forest and lush meadow valleys. In the autumn the region is marked by numerous open-air wine festivals making the experience an unforgettable one. There are plenty of opportunities to sample and to buy top-quality wines. Wurstmarkt is the largest wine festival in Bad Durkheim in September attractinf more than 600,00 visitors from all over world.

Take time to explore the quaint old towns and villages along the German Wine route known for thier historic market squares, old world restaurants and the narrow streets. A warm welcome awaits visitors to this region rich in tradition and natural treasures. Palatinate cuisine and the more refined Palatinate nouvelle cuisine are not to be missed either.
