Church Of The Holy Ghost

One of the main sights of the main square, Marktplatz, is the beautiful Gothic church of Heiliggeistkirche, the Church of the Holy Ghost. The church is one of the few buildings in Heidelberg to have survived the many wars during the past centuries. The steeple of the church, rising above the roofs, dominates the township.

The construction of the church began in 1498 but was not complete until 1544. The church was the burial place of 55 electors of the Palatinate for nearly 300 years, until the cemetery was ravaged by French invaders in the late 17th century. In 1706, a divider (wall) separating the two denominations were put in when both, the Catholics and Protestants, wanted to have services there, and it remained until the 1930’s. The church also has remains of the tombs and epitaphs of the Palatinate electors as well as a collection of manuscripts. Close to the church is the Hotel Zum Ritter, once the town hall and the only medieval building to survive the French incursions in 1689 and 1693.

Best time to visit

The months between May and October are the best time to visit Heidelberg.

Keep in mind to climb up the steeple if you visit the church. After making the steep ascent you will have an amazing view over the Old Town, from Neckar up to the castle.
