Alster Lake


Alster Lake in Hamburg is one of the popular lakes in the heart of this green Hanseatic City. This artificial lake is a huge 160 hectares expanse in the middle of the city that was created as early as the 13th century out of the Alster rivulet and its even smaller tributaries.

Hamburg Alster Lake with tree-lined pathways, gardens and boats all along the waterfront is amongst the most popular tourist’s areas. Art fans can admire numerous sculptures in and around the water, while the enormous variety of trees including ancient oaks, mighty poplars and conker-filled chestnuts are enough to impress all nature lovers. When you get tired from all that walking and enjoying the beautiful scenery you can refresh yourself at any of the local and wonderful restaurants or cafés located along the very beautiful Alster Lake in Hamburg. Alsterpavillon is a great place to have a beer and indulge in some people watching!

To get a different perspective of Hamburg, take city trip by steamer. From Jungfernstieg (underground/suburban train station Jungfernstieg) Alster steamers start for a tour through Hamburg's "living-room," the 18-hectare Binnenalster (Inner Alster) several times a day, offering appealing sights on the silhouette of the city.

The Binnenalster is bordered by luxury shops near Jungfernstieg and Ballindamm and the magnificent five-star Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. You can return to the Außenalster (Outer Alster—known by locals as the "jewel of Hamburg" under the Lombard's and Kennedybrücke bridges.

Visitors can rent boats to cruise around the lakes or for those less adventurous, there are tour boats for sightseeing. the waterfronts of the lakes explodes with food, music and street vendors during the first weekend in September. Alstervergnugen means "Alster Enjoyment" and is Hamburg's street fair around the lakes.

Best time to visit

The main tourist season runs from May to late October though the best time to enjoy Alster Lake is during winters when the lake is frozen. That time you can do ice skating and enjoy a great ambience.


Hanseats enjoy their oasis over an Alsterwasser, a concoction of beer and lemon-lime soda. The drink is as refreshing and invigorating on summer days as the Alster itself. Their version of a 'shandy'!


The lake is open to visitors to enjoy its scenic beauty from early morning till evening.
