Bremen Town Hall & Roland Statue

The Town Hall of Bremen and the Roland Statue are located at the heart of the city Bremen, Germany. The Town Hall is the residence of the President of the Senate and of the Mayor of Bremen. The Town Hall and Roland Statue of Bremen were added on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2004. Classic examples of Brick Gothic architecture in Europe, both the structures are more than 600 years old.

Built in the early 15th century, the Town Hall was renovated in the Weser Renaissance style in the early 17th century. Some more changes came along the 20th century when a new town hall was built right next to the old one due to the aftermath of the Second World War. The construction of the town hall depicts medieval Saalgeschossbau style. The Roland statue stands 5.5 m tall and is among the oldest statues erected in Bremen. The statue is situated in the market square right in front of the Town Hall facing towards the church. The Bremen Roland stands out as a symbol of market rights and freedom.

From the 9th century through to the present day, the Town Hall and the Roland Statue stand out to be the best historical bulidings in the city of Bremen and bear a symbol of civic autonomy, sovereignty, liberty and trading rights.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit would be in the summer months when the weather is pleasant.

Legend has it that the city of Bremen will only remain free and independent as long as the Roland stands tall watching over the city. For the same reason, a second Roland statue is safeguarded in the town’s underground, so that if the original statue is damaged then it can be quickly replaced by its substitute.

Any time of the day will be good for sightseeing.
