History
Checkpoint Charlie Museum in Berlin came to existence in the year 1963. The museum is located on the border crossing, Checkpoint Charlie and houses a library and a cinema hall. Checkpoint Charlie was the border checkpoint on Friedrichstrasse. Only military from the Western Powers, foreign tourists, and diplomats had the access to use the checkpoint but today it is open to all the people.
The books in the library are steeped in history and concern the issues that had come up regarding the Berlin Wall whereas the cinema hall aims at documenting the events that were taking place at this time. The museum provides us with an insight of the history when the Great Wall of Berlin had fallen. The museum is of historical significance as it exhibits the ill effects of the Cold War, the fall of the Great Berlin wall and the narrow escape of people from the East to the West.
The exhibitions in the museum are devoted to the great heroes of the early period who fought selflessly with means of non violence. The Charta 77 typewriter, Elena Bonner’s ‘death mask’ of Andrei Sacharov and Mahatma Gandhi’s diary are some of the dedications that can be witnessed in the museum.
